University matters, whether you like it or not

What university did you graduate from? Should it really matter to your prospects of getting a job?

Apparently it does; a new report warns that employers are missing out on a major pool of talent by purely focusing their graduate recruitment on the top 20 universities in the UK - the so-called Russell Group.

Campaign group Race for Opportunity conducted a survey that revealed graduates from ethnic minorities, in particular, still find it harder to get employment than their white counterparts, despite almost doubling their representation at university since 1995-96.

The report shows that 16% of UK university students were from an ethnic minority background in 2007-08 - up from 8.3% in 1995-96. But despite this, just 56.3% of ethnic minority students who graduated found work within a year, compared with 66% of white students.

Ethnic minorities were also under-represented at the majority of institutions in the Russell Group, which include the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds, Southampton, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh and others.

I wonder if any of you have had experience of this? Do you feel there is a kind of 'university snobbery' among employers where they look less favourably on less established higher education institutions?

I guess it's only human nature to be more impressed with qualifications from a top university. Having a degree from say, Kings College London, looks better on paper than one from Hull University. But does it matter when it comes to being suitable for a job? Employers always say they hire on attitude, not just what's written on paper.

I've not heard directly about an agency or recruiter being disparaging in an interview about your choice of college or uni? But I bet it does happen. I think it's vital employers broaden their recruitment outlook and place less importance on where someone studies, and more on what they can offer an organisation.

The government also has a stated commitment that 50% of all school leavers should enter higher education. This means that many more students - white and ethnic minority - will go to non-Russell Group institutions. So if employers are only cherry-picking graduates from these universities they will be fishing in an increasingly smaller pond.

I AM A UGANDAN ORIGINALLY AND I GOT MY FIRST UK DEGREE FROM LONDOND SOUTH BANK UNIVERSITY.BS.C hons. in civil engineering. I DID GET CONTRUCT JOBS BECOUSE OF MY CAD SKILLS, BUT NOW NOT MUCH JOB ARE AVAILABLE NOW. RACE DISCRIMINATION IS DISTROYING BOTH UK COMUNITIES AND HIYSTORIC COMMONELTH RELTIONSHIP. RELIGIOUS AND MORAL DISBELIVE OF COLONIAL MASTER. EVEN CARROT PICKING JOBS, YOU STILL FIND DISCRIMINATON ATTACH.

I completely agree with the report. I graduated with a Business Degree from University of Birmingham in 2007 and I have yet to find decent employment. Im currently in a basic job which I could have been doing when I was 16.
If I could have my time over again, I would have not bother with College or University and done what a fair few friends had done. Left school with hardly any G.C.S.E's, Started working in a Bank and worked my way up to a be a banking professional.

I QUITE AGREE WITH THIS DISCRIMINATE ATTITUDE OF EMPLOYERS.AND THE GOVERNMENT IS DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY SUPPORTING IT BUT THEY POSE TO THE PUBLIC TO BE EQUAL OPPORTUINTY COUNTRY.THAT IS A LIE,YOU CANNOT EVEN HUNT FOR A JOB WITH A PURE WHITE PERSON AND FEEL YOU ARE GONNA BE SUCCESSFUL,WHETHER YOU ARE THE MOST QUALIFIED OR NOT,IN MOST CASES IT DOES NOT COUNT,

Hello there! I am searching for some sort of competent college or university to successfully study international affairs. The school or university needs to be somewhere in the US. Someone just said me that usually the Elliott Institution of International Affairs should be at least one of currently the best all over our completely usa. Does someone know if the information about the academy is just real? It surely would be very super if anybody may have few good infos for me.

Im off out on a charter trip with a neighbour and a few freinds after xmas, and wondered if anybody could give me a bit of advice.

Call your local authorities agencies and ask about grants for single moms. Another alternative is trying to find employment at the school. Some colleges will allow employees to attend for free or as low as 20% tuition. Beneficial luck! Don't quit!!!

work at home is not a bad idea, but can't interact with people sometimes make you lonely..

Where can we go to have an extra marital affair? It seems to me that espoused ladies together with mated males gazing to have affairs all go to the same mated dating sites. I believe that its a good thing together with no one should have to remain devoted to a marriage they hate.
