Good news - and bad - for graduates

A report out today (13 January) looks at the state of the graduate recruitment market and the number of vacancies likely to be available in 2010.

It has some good news for graduates - the 100 top employers surveyed said they had increased recruitment targets by 12% - equating to about 1,600 jobs. Unfortunately - here comes the bad news - a quarter of those have already been filled by 'the class of 2009' - those graduating last year.

The report by High Fliers Research also found that some employers have already closed the application process for this year. So, there are more vacancies, but there will be increased competition in getting a job. Another report found nearly 50 graduates apply for every vacancy in the UK, compared to 43 in Australia and 40 in South Africa.

So what can graduates - or any jobseeker - do stand out from the crowd and make themselves more employable? Career Doctor bloggers have dispensed mountains of good advice over the previous six months. Here are some of the best tips:
Oh yes, one final point: UK graduates were found to earn on average £25,000 - more than £3,000 less than graduates in Australia and Canada, and £4,000 less than in the US.

Good luck!
