If you get invited to a job interview by a prospective employer, it may be worth checking how many candidates they are seeing and where you fall on the list.
Why? Because an intriguing new study by researchers at Cambridge University's Judge Business School suggests job candidates may be hired depending on the order in which they are interviewed - in the same way contestants on the X Factor who sing later in the show are less likely to be voted off.
For reasons best know to themselves, the boffins have been investigating what gives winning talent show contestants the edge, and found that the order in which they perform plays an important role in their success.
Using data from more than 150 shows worldwide in the X Factor and Idol series, the study found that when contestants perform in the later positions they are less likely to be eliminated in the following rounds; in straightforward terms people better remember the later contestants than those on stage first.
This 'bias' can therefore be applied to other situations where performances are judged sequentially. For example, job candidates may be disadvantaged in the process depending on the interview order.
Dr Lionel Page, part of the research team, even says: "In a job interview process a very good applicant who is the second or third interviewee seen, may be less likely to get the job because he/she is less likely to be remembered than the later candidates. This is both unfair for the candidate and inefficient for the organisation which may not select the best candidate for the post."
So there you have it. Maximise your chances of success by trying to get interviewed last. If you then put in a really good performance, the job should be yours!

I cannot really agree with this. A good strong candidate appearing first can often set the bar, with the following interviewees compared to the first impressive candidate repeatedly falling short.
I dont know what it takes I have been the first one to be interveiwed and was told that I did well but did not get the job. And I have got down to the last two and still did not get it. I don't know what to do where am I going wrong?
